The fall
webworm, Hyphantria cunea Drury
(Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) has been damaging more than 600 species plants:
forest, shade and fruit trees. The American white moth has been included in the
European Union Plant Protection Organization quarantine list. At present the
pest is widely spread in Western Georgia, including the Black Sea basin of
Adjara. In Georgia-Batumi, the fall webwormcauses damage to approximately 100
species of deciduous trees. It feeds on almost all fruit, shade, and ornamental
trees except conifers, commonly attacking hickory, walnut, birch, cherry,
grape, apple, prunus and crabapple. Larvae constructs silken tents at the top
of individual plants. Foliage is webbed together to form a nest that the larvae
feed, defecate and pupate in. Nests may cause some branch deformity in years
following infestation but otherwise cause little permanent damage. Nests are
very unsightly in orchard and ornamental plantings. The use of environmentally
safe means is significant for plant protection from pest insects. The pest
mainly inhabits populated areas, parks and underwood belt, in places of mass
resort. Various control methods have been deployed against the pest H.cunea We made chemical control with
the organic insecticidae. NeemAzal-T/S in Batumi in 2007. We used hose-end
sprayers and commercial high-pressure sprayers for reaching upper portions of
tall trees. The present study has shown that NeemAzal-T/S has got positive
effect for control of H.cunea. That
the feding activity of larvae in the treated stands has decreased rapidly. In
conclusion, this study has revealed that NeemAzal-T/S has preventive nutrition
and growth inhibition properties against H.cunea.
